The Masonic Hall is one of those buildings that make you appreciate this city's fascinating past. The structure, which sits next to the Garden Theater on North Avenue, was built in 1895. For 80 years it was the meeting place of the Masons, a fraternal organization that dates to the late 16th century. The building has been silent for decades, but you can still find the Mason's "square and compass" emblem on chairs that are scattered about. Poke around and you'll find large metal safes and secret passages. A massive ballroom dominates the third floor. Developers hope to convert this and the second floor into apartments. A Japanese restaurant has signed a lease to occupy the first floor.
