During the Vicksburg battle, the Shirley House was surrounded by shelters dug by Union soldiers trying to shield themselves from Confederate artillery fire. The 45th Illinois Infantry used the home as its headquarters. It's the only surviving wartime home in the Vicksburg National Military Park. Read more about Vicksburg in the PG travel section.
